I hope that people will consider showing support to this girl. Not only has she had to deal with a very frightening experience, now she will have to deal with the stigma of being a fat person in a world that hates fat people. Such a sad thing that hate seems to be more important to the general public than giving each other a chance to just be.
Our last post of 2013 was about Alexis Shapiro, the 12-year-old girl who developed hypothalamic obesity after having a brain tumor removed. A new friend of the Shapiro’s posted a comment that included an address to send cards and letters to Alexis to cheer her up while she’s going through this difficult period. I can’t imagine what it must be like to not only have to cope with a debilitating illness, but to have all the fat shame and weight stigma piled on top of that. If there’s ever been a moment for Fat Acceptance to use their power for good, it’s right now to send some love to Alexis Shapiro.
I just ask one thing: don’t make this about her weight loss surgery and don’t make this any kind of political issue. She’s a child. She just needs our love and support. So if you feel comfortable doing…
