Keep Your Load Covered

This isn’t the sort of thing that one thinks about that much, but it’s actually a safety hazard as well as contributing to pollution. Debris flying out of the back of a truck could obstruct the view of a driver, causing an accident. I would hope that most truckers are more careful about keeping their loads covered.

Why Drive Drunk When You Can Call the Limo?

Boys and girls, if you have limousine service at your disposal 24-7, there is no excuse for driving drunk, EVER!

I know that most of us think we are better at everything when we’re drunk. Still, if you get busted driving drunk and you could have had your drunk ass taken back home in style, I cut you no slack.

Even for us common folk, most bars get you a free cab ride home if you’re plastered.

Driving drunk may seek okey-dokey, until you wrap your car around a tree or worse, kill someone.

Just don’t do it.

Guest Post: What It’s Like In A Mental Hospital

Your experience and my second cousin’s (my cousin’s son) experience were very different than was my cousin’s experience. She’s now 48 years old. Thirty-two years ago, she ended up on a mental ward for a weekend after taking pills and cutting her wrists. For the most part she was treated like a pariah and a person of below average intelligence. One nurse told her that she was a freak and would always be a freak. The psychiatrist diagnosed her as a “hysterical neurotic.” There was only one nurse who talked to her as if she was a human being. She has since mistrusted people in the mental health profession and is very leery of getting counseling.
I truly hope that overall conditions in mental health treatment continue to improve. Having services that were more affordable would be one step in the right direction. Admissibly, these days all medical care tends to be cost-prohibitive.

#322 & #323 “My friend group has a case of the Creepy Dude. How do we clear that up?”

We as women are generally taught from day one to be sweet and polite, to not raise our voices or hurt anyone’s feelings. The Creeper’s feelings are given higher worth than the feelings of the women who have to suffer his creepiness. This is how society as a whole treats women. Our feelings and our very worth tend to be minimized.
What these creepy men are doing is not okay, and the fact that the boyfriends of the women who wrote these letters try to pass these guys’ behavior off as harmless is rape culture in action. They too have been trained from day one that women’s thoughts and feelings are worth less than men’s.

Captain Awkward

Here is Letter #322. It and the other letter are below the jump because it’s fucking creepy in there.

Edited to Add: It’s frankly depressing that this post has struck a chord with so many people, but I’m grateful and honored to be able to help the letter writers and to have given voice to what so many people were feeling. Unfortunately the demands of moderating this discussion have become overwhelming this week, so as of Monday, August 13th comments are locked. We’ll pick up this discussion some other time. Thank you for all of your insightful contributions and for making this one of the best commentspaces on the Web.</EDIT>

At KHEL 666, we’re all about promoting independent artists as well as sharing longtime favorites.
This is a decent enough background track and has potential to develop into a fine electronica piece. I feel that if he kept working on it and beefed it up a little, gave it a bit of a hook, it could be a really fine tune.
Regarding the video:
I’ll take into consideration that I (49 year old female) am not this fellow’s target audience. However, he almost lost me by starting the video with scantily clad babes. Yawn. I don’t need to see something strikingly innovative to hold my attention, but I would prefer not to see the same old same old. Mix it up a little.

Tell Me Again Why We Don’t Need Feminism: The Huffington Post

This is a comment I made on a Huffington Post article which started out featuring a quote from Meghan McCain, the daughter of Senator John McCain, and for reasons unknown, devolved into a fashion show. Because, you know, women and their pretty frocks. A woman’s sole purpose, in the eyes of the general public, is still to be eye candy, a good little girl who looks pretty and obeys the orders of the menfolk; or a bad girl to excite and arouse the menfolk. A woman is not supposed to be a human being with opinions and ideas that might contradict what the menfolk are saying.

Just look at the sidebar to see more about what a woman’s place in society is supposed to be. It’s all about being eye candy.

My comment on the article:

Am I the only one who finds it discouraging that this piece ends with the “style evolution of Meghan McCain?” Rather than take this young woman seriously as a political pundit who might have something to say, it all boils down to “what was she wearing?” I guess it’s a step above “Meghan McCain looking hot in a slinky ensemble” or other such twaddle. However, I doubt anyone would ever have thought to put together a slide show featuring the “style evolution of John McCain.”

That’s my two (feminist) cents.

Waiting for the Hate Brigade to tell me how I’m a man-hating Feminazi who is trying to bring about the downfall of the family and of civilization as we know it.

my brain malformation and fat shaming

I am aghast–I am beyond aghast–that these so called medical professionals would deny treatment for this serious condition because they are prejudiced against a person’s body type. A person with this condition could lose all the weight in the world and there isn’t even a remote chance that the condition would be resolved.
The “war on obesity” is making things worse and worse. It has to stop, but it will never stop unless people SPEAK UP and make it clear that this kind of treatment is intolerable.
I so hope you find a doctor who will see you as a person and not a number on a BMI chart. This discrimination is unforgivable. Best wishes to you.

First, Do No Harm

Katrina writes:

As cheesy and cliche as it sounds, on June 25th, 2012 my entire world was turned upside down. I was diagnosed with Arnold Chiari Malformation, Type 1. Before my diagnosis, I was working five days a week, I had only fifteen credits left to obtain my Associates Degree, I was volunteering at a drug and alcohol rehabilitation center for women, I spent time all my free time working on my doula-lactation-childbirth education business, and I was enjoying being a newlywed. And then it was all gone.

The afternoon of June 21st I left work early with a blinding headache. My vision kept wavering on and off and I thought I was going to faint every time I stood up. My heart was pounding and it wouldn’t stop. I considered going to the hospital but, unwisely, I decided it was only a migraine. The next morning, feeling a little…
